Wildfire season is a refrigerator season in Southeast Boise. Smoke from the Owyhees and the mountains north of town hangs in the valley in August and September, drifts in through the garage door and the kitchen window, and cakes onto condenser coils that were already carrying a year of Barber Valley construction dust. Then there are the garage units. Half of Southeast Boise keeps a second refrigerator or a chest freezer in the garage, and those quit at both ends of the year: in July when the garage hits 110 and the compressor cannot shed heat, and in January when the garage drops below 40 and the thermostat stops calling for cold, so the freezer side thaws. Inside the house the failures are ordinary: a defrost heater that reads open, an evaporator fan seized, a drain frozen with the mineral crust hard water leaves. A Micron engineer off a night shift once met us at his Harris Ranch door with soft ice cream and a compressor clicking every ninety seconds.
Cold is being made but not moved. A frosted evaporator from a failed defrost heater, thermostat or control, or an evaporator fan that has stopped. We pull the rear panel, look at the frost pattern, test each part with the meter and replace the one that failed from the truck.
Compressor not running or running without cooling. Start relay, capacitor, condenser fan, or in the harder cases a sealed-system leak or a compressor that has failed. Amperage and temperature readings tell us which, and we say plainly whether this is a relay repair or a larger decision.
The compressor starting and tripping its overload, most often after a summer of smoke-caked coils. We clean the condenser, test the relay and measure the start current. Often a relay and a cleaning bring it back; if the compressor is done, the numbers show it and we tell you.
The garage fell below about 40 degrees and the thermostat read the box as cold enough. Some units accept a garage kit that keeps the compressor cycling; older ones simply need a heated space. We check the model, the thermostat and the compressor and tell you which you have.
A defrost drain plugged with mineral and debris, a drain pan cracked, or an ice maker fill line weeping at the fitting. We clear and warm the drain, inspect the pan and fitting and stop the water where it starts, then check the floor is dry.
Warm air leaking past a gasket, a door that no longer closes square, or a defrost cycle that has quit. We test the gasket seal, the hinge, the defrost heater and the control, and replace the part the meter points to rather than guessing.
A warm refrigerator gets a fixed routine. Listen for the compressor and the fans. Thermometer in each compartment. Clamp meter on the compressor lead to read start and run current. Those three checks split the problem into airflow, electrical or sealed system in the first minutes and stop us from changing a control board when a fan has quit. We pull the condenser cover and look at the coils, because in Southeast Boise the coils are guilty more often than not. Then the rear panel comes off and the defrost circuit is tested piece by piece.
