Appliance repair in Downtown Boise and the North End

Basement laundry down a narrow 1915 staircase, a gas range older than the person cooking on it, a condo dishwasher that stopped mid-cycle above a downtown restaurant.

The route

Working Downtown and the North End

I-84 east to the Connector carries us from the shop into Downtown, off at Myrtle or Front among the condos and lofts of BoDo and the Linen District, and from there 13th St and 15th St climb into the North End grid, where the streets count up from 8th St toward Hyde Park and the big maples along Harrison Blvd. Warm Springs Ave runs out from the far side of Downtown toward the East End and the trailheads under Table Rock. It is one stretch of freeway and then city streets, and the trucks are in this part of town every working day because St. Luke’s downtown campus, the Capitol offices and the shift schedules around them keep the calls coming at odd hours. Early and late windows are normal here, Monday to Saturday, and no address in ZIP 83702 carries a distance fee.

These are the oldest houses in the valley: 1900s to 1940s bungalows and Craftsman homes with the washer and dryer in a low basement, a dryer vent that runs to a window well, and a kitchen that has been remodeled around a chimney that no longer serves anything. Wiring and gas lines have been updated piecemeal, so a range on a circuit that was never meant for it is common. Along Harrison Blvd and Warm Springs Ave the kitchens are a different story, with Sub-Zero, Wolf, Thermador and Miele built-ins that need careful hands. Downtown condos bring compact and stacked machines with long vent runs. Every one of them drinks Boise’s hard water, so scaled valves and coated dishwasher elements are the daily bread.

What Downtown and the North End call about

ApplianceWhat we see most here
RefrigeratorsBuilt-in Sub-Zero and Thermador units on Harrison Blvd with a failed condenser fan or a dusty coil behind the grille; condo refrigerators with a defrost problem; vintage-look retro fridges in remodeled bungalow kitchens that stop cooling.
DryersBasement dryers venting through a window well with a crushed or lint-packed duct; thermal fuses that opened from the restriction; drum rollers and belts worn out on machines that have been running since the 1990s.
WashersFront-loaders on uneven basement floors that walk and trip an unbalance code; inlet valves and screens narrowed by scale; drain pumps stopped by grit; stacked condo pairs with a door lock that stays shut.
DishwashersCompact and panel-ready dishwashers in North End remodels with a scaled heater or a stuck float; drain hoses routed wrong under a retrofitted counter; Bosch and Miele units with a leak sensor tripped by a dripping door seal.
Ranges & ovensGas ranges from every decade with a weak igniter or a spark module that clicks on one burner; Wolf and Viking ovens that hold temperature poorly because a sensor has drifted; electric wall ovens with an open bake element.
Ice makersScaled fill valves in Sub-Zero and KitchenAid built-ins; frozen fill tubes where the water line runs along a cold exterior wall; modules that stopped harvesting in French-door refrigerators.
Dishwasher

Dishwasher · Harrison Blvd

A panel-ready dishwasher in a 1930s house on the boulevard, stopping partway through and blinking a leak warning. Nothing visibly wet. The door gasket had a hardened corner that let a spoonful escape onto the base pan sensor every cycle. New gasket, base pan dried and reset, heater checked for scale, full test cycle before the panel went back on.

Fridge

Fridge · Downtown loft

A counter-depth refrigerator in a loft above a busy block, warm on the fresh-food side after a hot stretch of days. The condenser coil under the unit was matted with dust and the fan spun slow under the meter. Coil cleaned, fan motor replaced from the truck, temperatures logged. The owner wanted an evening window after a hospital shift.

Dryer

Dryer · North End basement

A gas dryer at the bottom of a steep basement stair near Camel’s Back Park, running warm briefly and then cold. The igniter glowed but the flame never held, which pointed straight at a failed gas coil set. Coils replaced, the window-well vent cleared of a decade of lint, and a load of towels run to prove it.

Washer

Washer · Hyde Park

A ten-year-old front-loader in a bungalow two blocks from the Hyde Park shops, filling for ages and then quitting with a water-supply code. The hot inlet screen was solid white with scale and the valve coil measured open. New valve, screens cleaned, hoses checked for kinks, and the cycle filled the way it did when the machine was new.

Downtown & North End questions

Can you get a washer out of a North End basement without wrecking the stairs?

Yes. Basement laundry is the norm in the North End and we are used to narrow stairs, low headroom and old plaster. Most repairs happen where the machine sits, so it rarely needs to leave the room. When a unit has to be pulled from a tight closet or under a low ceiling, we use sliders and take our time. Your walls and treads are part of the job.

Do you work on the high-end built-ins along Harrison Blvd and Warm Springs Ave?

We service Sub-Zero, Wolf, Thermador, Viking, Miele, JennAir and Dacor in Downtown Boise and the North End, and we say it plainly: we service and repair these lines, we are not factory representatives. The $99 diagnostic is the same as for any other machine, and the written quote arrives before we order a part or touch a panel.

My downtown Boise condo has a stacked washer and dryer. Is that a problem?

Not for us. Stacked pairs are common in the condos around BoDo and the Linen District, and the usual complaints are a dryer that runs cold because the long vent is clogged and a washer door lock that will not release. We diagnose with the unit in place when we can, and the $99 diagnostic is inside the repair price you approve.

My North End house has old wiring. Can that cause an appliance problem?

It can, and we check for it. A range or dryer on a circuit with a loose neutral, an undersized breaker or a worn receptacle will show odd symptoms that look like a machine fault. We meter the supply before we blame the appliance. If the trouble is in the house wiring rather than the machine, we tell you so and you have paid $99, not a repair you did not need.
