An ice maker is a small machine living inside a big one, and in the Treasure Valley it is the first part of the refrigerator to feel the water. Every fill pushes a few ounces of hard Boise city water or harder Meridian, Kuna and Nampa well water through a valve with a tiny port, and the mineral stays behind. The valley's ice maker complaint usually arrives in stages. First the cubes shrink and turn cloudy with a hollow center, because the valve is passing less water each fill. Then a fill tube freezes on a cold night since the slow trickle has time to ice up. Finally the tray gets nothing and the bin empties. A Star household on a well saw all three over a winter and assumed the ice maker itself had died. The meter said the module was fine; the valve was passing a third of its rated flow. New valve, thawed tube, fresh filter, and the bin was full by morning.
A fill valve scaled shut or reading open on the meter, a frozen fill tube, a shutoff arm or optical sensor stuck in the off position, or a failed module motor. We check water reaching the tray first, then work backward through valve, line and module.
Low fill volume from a scaled valve or a saturated filter, or a freezer running a little warm so the cubes harvest early. We measure the fill in a cup against the spec, read the valve coil, and check freezer temperature before naming a part.
A filter long past its date, a bin that has absorbed freezer odors, or stale water in a line that has not been used much. We replace the filter if you want, flush the line and clean the bin; not every visit needs a mechanical part.
A door seal on the ice compartment letting warm air in, a heater strip on the mold sticking cubes together, or a dispenser motor that stalls. We check the seal, the mold temperature and the auger drive before deciding. Clumping in a dry valley winter usually points at the seal.
A fill valve seeping past its seat, a fill tube cracked or misaligned so water misses the tray and freezes on the floor, or an ice maker overfilling because the valve will not shut fully. We watch a fill cycle and catch it happening.
A module that skips its harvest, a thermostat inside the ice maker reading wrong, a control board losing the ice maker signal, or a fill valve that works cold and sticks warm. We run a forced harvest and meter each step so the repair is aimed at the right piece.
Ice makers fail slowly and quietly, so we start with the water. Is the supply valve behind the fridge fully open? When was the filter last changed? Is there a softener, and is it running? Then we trigger a fill and catch the water in a cup to compare against the rated volume; in the Treasure Valley that single test explains most no-ice calls. The meter reads the valve coil, the module's motor and thermostat, and on newer refrigerators the optical sensor and control signals. We look at the fill tube for ice, the mold for scale, the arm for free movement. Then you get the part by name and a written number you can say yes or no to.
