The route

Working the Boise Bench

The Bench sits above the river on the south side, and we reach it by running Overland Rd east from the shop past Cloverdale and Five Mile to Cole, Orchard and Vista, or by taking I-84 east and dropping off at Cole or Vista when the call is up near the Boise Depot. Depot Bench and Vista Village are the older end near the top of the hill; Latah and the streets between Orchard and Cole fill in the middle; the neighborhoods south of Overland run toward the airport and the freeway. Boise State sits at the foot of the hill, which is why so many of the houses up here are rentals owned by someone who lives somewhere else. It is a compact area for us, and a call near the airport fits easily between one on Vista and one on Orchard.

Bench houses are 1950s, 1960s and 1970s ranches, brick or lap siding, many with a full basement where the laundry lives beside the furnace. A basement dryer means a vent run up through the joists and out a rim, and it collects lint as well as any attic run. The water is Boise city water, hard, so inlet valves, dishwasher elements and ice-maker fill valves scale. Kitchens were redone in the 1990s and 2000s, so a lot of the Bench runs on twenty-year-old Whirlpool, GE and Frigidaire packages that are failing on the same schedule. Landlords with tenants near Boise State call us because the tenant can be home while the owner approves by text.

What the Bench calls about

ApplianceWhat we see most here
RefrigeratorsTwenty-year-old top-freezers in Latah rentals with a failed defrost heater; garage fridges south of Overland that stop in a cold snap or cook in July.
DryersBasement dryers off Vista and Orchard venting up through joists, lint-packed and airflow-starved; a squeal from glazed drum rollers on an older Kenmore.
WashersTop-loaders in Depot Bench basements with a slow fill through scaled inlet screens; a drain pump on a front-loader in a Boise State rental jammed with coins.
DishwashersStanding water and cloudy glasses in 1990s remodels around Vista Village; a scaled heating element; a drain hose without a high loop under the sink.
Ranges & ovensCoil ranges from the 1990s losing a burner receptacle; gas Frigidaire ranges near the Depot with an oven igniter too weak to open the valve.
Ice makersFill valves narrowed by city-water scale in Whirlpool and Amana top-freezers, hollow cubes, and a fill tube frozen after a dripping valve.
Dryer

Dryer · Latah

Basement laundry in a 1960s brick ranch off Latah St, vent climbing through the joists to a hood on the side of the house. The dryer shrieks on every turn. Drum rollers glazed flat and the idler pulley worn to a groove. We replace rollers, idler and belt together and run the drum quiet before we pack up.

Fridge

Fridge · Vista Village

A top-freezer in a Vista Village kitchen with frost building on the back wall and the fresh-food side climbing into the fifties. The defrost heater reads open on the meter. We replace heater and defrost thermostat, clear the evaporator, and the owner has cold milk by dinner.

Dishwasher

Dishwasher · Boise State rental

Tenants near Boise State, owner in Eagle. Water standing after every cycle and a smell coming up from the sump. The drain hose under the sink was looped low and the pump full of grit. Owner approves the written number by text, and the invoice and warranty land in her inbox that afternoon.

Washer

Washer · Depot Bench

A 2000s Whirlpool top-loader in a Depot Bench basement, filling so slowly the cycle times out. Both inlet screens gray with scale and the cold-side valve barely opening. New valve from the truck, screens cleaned, fill timed against the book. One written number, the $99 inside it.

Dryer repair on the Boise Bench

$99 diagnostic, inside the repair you approve · all pricing after the diagnostic, in writing

Bench dryers live in basements and garages, and both places send the exhaust on a long trip. A dryer off Orchard or Vista that runs cold, shrieks, or takes two cycles is usually fighting a lint-packed vent or worn drum hardware. We meter the fuse, igniter or element, read airflow at the hood, and quote in writing. The $99 diagnosis is included in the repair if you approve; if not, $99 is the full bill.

What you noticeWhat it usually isWhat we do
No heat, drum turns fineThermal fuse opened behind a blocked vent, or a gas igniter failedMeter the fuse and igniter, replace from the truck, clear the run
Loud squeal every rotationGlazed drum rollers or a worn idler pulley bearingReplace rollers, idler and belt as a set, spin the drum quiet
Shuts off after a short whileHigh-limit thermostat tripping from poor airflow, or a motor overheatingMeter the thermostats and motor, restore airflow, replace the failed part
Can you vent-check a Bench basement dryer that exits through the rim joist?

Yes. We read airflow at the outside hood and compare it to what the dryer is pushing at the back, which tells us how much the run in between is holding. We clear what is reachable behind the machine and tell you plainly if the longer section needs attention.

Washer repair on the Boise Bench

$99 diagnostic, inside the repair you approve · all pricing after the diagnostic, in writing

A Bench washer that fills at a trickle, stops before the spin, or leaves the basement floor wet is a common call from Latah to Depot Bench. Hard city water scales the inlet valve; coins and hair ties jam the drain pump in rentals near Boise State; a lid lock or door latch stops registering. We meter the valve, pump and lock, name the part, and write one number. The $99 diagnostic is inside the price you approve.

What you noticeWhat it usually isWhat we do
Fill takes forever, cycle times outScreens and inlet valve choked with city-water scaleClean the screens, replace the valve, time the fill to spec
Stops full of waterDrain pump jammed with a coin or sock, or a failed pump motorClear or replace the pump, run a drain-and-spin to an empty drum
Wet floor around the machineSplit fill hose, cracked drain hose or a leaking tub sealReplace hoses, inspect the seal, run a full cycle and check the floor
Do Bench basement washers have any special problems?

Mostly the drain. A basement washer often pumps up to a standpipe or a utility sink, and a tired pump struggles with the lift. Add a coin or two from a tenant’s pocket and the drum stays full. We test the pump under a real load and replace it if it is not up to the height.

Refrigerator and freezer repair on the Boise Bench

$99 diagnostic, inside the repair you approve · all pricing after the diagnostic, in writing

A Bench refrigerator going warm gets a same-day window whenever we can make one. Twenty-year-old top-freezers in Vista Village rentals lose their defrost heaters and ice up; garage units south of Overland cook in the summer heat behind dust-packed coils and stall in the winter cold; a start relay clicks and never starts. We meter the compressor, the defrost circuit and the fans, and write one number with the $99 diagnostic inside it.

What you noticeWhat it usually isWhat we do
Fresh-food side warm, freezer frostyDefrost heater or thermostat open, evaporator iced overMeter the defrost parts, replace, clear the ice, verify airflow
Clicking every so often, never coolsStart relay or capacitor failed, or a compressor drawing high ampsMeter the relay and compressor, replace the relay, report the readings
Freezer near the airport thawed in JanuaryGarage dropped below the thermostat’s range and the unit stoppedMeter the thermostat, fit a garage kit or advise indoor storage for winter
Will you repair an older top-freezer in a Bench rental, or just tell me to replace it?

We repair it if the meter says the part that failed is one worth replacing. Defrost heaters, fans and relays on an older Whirlpool or Kenmore are common truck stock. If the compressor itself is drawing failure amps, we tell you plainly and you decide. Either way the diagnostic is $99 and the price is written.

Stove, range and oven repair on the Boise Bench

$99 diagnostic, inside the repair you approve · all pricing after the diagnostic, in writing

Bench kitchens run on electric coil and glass-top ranges from 1990s and 2000s remodels, with gas Frigidaire and GE ranges in the houses near the Depot. A burner that stays cold, an oven that never gets to temperature, an igniter that glows but never lights the oven. We meter the element, receptacle, igniter and sensor, name what failed, and write one number. $99 for the diagnosis, already inside the repair you approve.

What you noticeWhat it usually isWhat we do
Coil burner dead or only warmFailed coil, a scorched receptacle or an infinite switchMeter each, replace the failed part, check every burner at full
Oven igniter glows, oven stays coldIgniter too weak to draw the amps that open the gas valveRead igniter amps, replace, time the oven to temperature
Oven runs hot or cold by fifty degreesTemperature sensor drifted or a control board miscalibratedMeter the sensor, replace or recalibrate, probe-check the cavity
My Bench rental has a gas range that smells of gas before the oven lights. Is that the igniter?

Often, yes. A weak igniter glows without pulling enough current to open the valve fully, and gas drifts before it finally lights. Shut the oven off and call. We read the igniter amps, replace it from the truck, and time the light-off. A written warranty covers the repair.

Dishwasher repair on the Boise Bench

$99 diagnostic, inside the repair you approve · all pricing after the diagnostic, in writing

Bench dishwashers were mostly fitted in the 1990s and 2000s kitchen remodels, and they have been drinking hard Boise city water ever since. Cloudy glasses, water standing in the bottom, a cycle that will not start, a leak at the door. Scale coats the element and the spray arm; a drain hose without a high loop lets water back in. We meter the element and pump, and give you one written price with the $99 inside it.

What you noticeWhat it usually isWhat we do
Glasses come out filmedScale on the element and spray arm, or a softener out of saltDescale or replace the element, clear the arm, run a hot test cycle
Water left in the tubClogged drain pump or a drain hose looped low under the sinkClear the pump, re-route the hose with a high loop, drain-test
Will not start, lights flashDoor latch not registering, or a control faultMeter the latch, replace it or the board, run a full cycle
Can you replace a dishwasher that dies in my Bench rental, or only repair?

We repair. If the diagnosis shows a part worth replacing, we do it from the truck or order it and return with no second trip fee. If the machine is not worth fixing, we tell the owner plainly. We do not sell or install new dishwashers, so the advice is not steered.

Ice maker repair on the Boise Bench

$99 diagnostic, inside the repair you approve · all pricing after the diagnostic, in writing

An ice maker on the Bench goes quiet for a reason we can meter. Hard city water narrows the fill valve until the cubes come out small and hollow, a fill tube freezes after a valve drips, the module wears out after years of harvests. Rentals near Boise State often just live without ice, but the fix is usually one part. We test the valve and module, thaw the fill path, and write one number. The $99 diagnostic is inside it.

What you noticeWhat it usually isWhat we do
Nothing for a week, no soundFill valve coil open or the module has failedMeter both, replace the failed one, watch a full cycle
Cubes small, cloudy or hollowFill valve narrowed by scale, tray underfillingReplace the valve, measure the fill, check house pressure
Solid block in the trayFill tube frozen or a valve leaking past its seatThaw the tube, replace the valve, verify a clean fill
Is an ice maker worth fixing in a Bench rental?

Usually. Most ice-maker calls come down to a fill valve or a module, both common and both on the truck. The owner gets one written number by text and decides. Tenants notice ice; a working one is a small thing that keeps a lease happy. The $99 diagnosis is included if the repair goes ahead.

Boise Bench questions

Do you work on rentals on the Boise Bench when the owner is out of town?

All the time. The Bench near Boise State is full of rentals, and the routine is settled: tenant gives us access, we diagnose with a meter, and the owner or property manager gets a text with the failed part named plainly and one written number. Approval by text, repair from the truck, and the written invoice and warranty go to the owner.

Why does a basement dryer on the Bench lose heat?

A basement dryer pushes its exhaust up through the joists and out a rim or a chimney chase, and that run gathers lint. Airflow drops, the dryer overheats, and the thermal fuse opens. We replace the fuse and clear the run behind the dryer, and check flow at the outside hood so the new fuse has a fair chance.

Is Boise Bench water hard enough to hurt appliances?

Yes. Boise city water is hard across the Bench, and the machines that heat it, the dishwasher and the washer’s hot side, collect the scale. Ice-maker fill valves narrow, dishwasher elements coat, and glasses go cloudy. A softener helps if you have one. We repair what has failed and tell you what the water did to it.

How is the $99 handled on a Bench repair?

You pay $99 for a real diagnosis with a meter, not a guess. We name the failed part, write one number, and you decide. Approve and the $99 is already part of that number. Decline and $99 is the whole bill, and you keep the diagnosis. No repair prices are quoted until the diagnostic is done, and everything is in writing.
